Walmart and Shopify – A Boon for eCommerce and Your Online Store

This week Walmart announced that they were partnering with Shopify to open up the Walmart Marketplace to Shopify retailers. This is great news for anyone wanting to get into, or expand their Ecommerce business. Shopify makes it easy to set up an online store, and access to the Walmart Marketplace will give small businesses an alternative to Amazon Marketplace.

With a Shopify Store and the Walmart App, sellers will have access to millions of customers by listing their products on Walmart.com. Walmart is not charging monthly fees at this time. Referral Fees are ranging between 8% and 20% depending on the product category, with most categories at 15%. This makes the Walmart Marketplace a much better deal for sellers than the Amazon Marketplace, which currently charges a listing fee or monthly fee in addition to a referral fee.

Not everyone will be able to take advantage of the Walmart integration. Walmart says they are only looking to add 1200 Shopify sellers this year. And at this moment, the Walmart app does not seem to be working well.

To be considered for the Walmart Marketplace you must:

  • Be based in the US, with a United States Tax ID Number
  • Have UPC or GTIN codes for your products
  • Sell products eligible for sale on Walmart.com
  • Meet Walmart’s service requirements

While most businesses will not be able to sell on Walmart.com just yet, if you have been thinking of getting into eCommerce and setting up your own online store, now is a good time to get started. I am sure that soon Walmart will be opening up their Marketplace to more sellers and you will want to be ready.
